Tellurium has a silvery-white metallic appearance, a density of 6.25 g/cm³, a melting point of 452°C, a boiling point of 1390°C, and a hardness of 2.5 (Mohs hardness). There are two allotropes: crystalline and amorphous. Tellurium burns in air with a blue flame to produce tellurium dioxide; it can react with halogens, but not with sulfur and selenium. It is soluble in sulfuric acid, nitric acid, potassium hydroxide and potassium cyanide solutions. It has poor heat transfer and electrical conductivity.
5N high-purity tellurium is mainly used to prepare compound semiconductors, high-purity alloys, superconducting materials, solders, and dopants for compound semiconductors.
4N high-purity tellurium is mainly used to prepare II-IV compound semiconductors, solar cells, thermoelectric conversion elements, refrigeration elements, etc.
The global market for High Purity Tellurium was estimated to be worth US$ 49 million in 2023 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 66.1 million by 2030 with a CAGR of 4.1% during the forecast period 2024-2030.
With the advancement of metal purification technology, the purity of high-purity non-ferrous metals used in various high-end fields has gradually transitioned from 4N to 5N and 6N, and some application fields have even reached 7N (such as electronic semiconductors). The purity determines the performance of the application process. The higher the purity, the lower the impurities, and the higher the performance of the material.
High-purity tellurium is mainly used to prepare materials such as II-VI compound semiconductors, solar cells, and detectors.
With the continuous expansion and rapid development of the semiconductor market, the demand for high-quality and high-performance raw materials has been greatly promoted. Among them, high-purity tellurium, as one of the indispensable key materials for compound semiconductors, has also shown a significant growth trend in demand. With the continuous advancement of semiconductor technology and its increasing application, especially in the rapid development of advanced processes, high-performance chips, and emerging fields such as 5G communications, the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and new energy vehicles, higher requirements are placed on the purity, stability, and reliability of semiconductor materials. Due to its unique physical and chemical properties, high-purity tellurium plays a vital role in the preparation of compound semiconductor materials, especially in the synthesis and application of compound semiconductor materials such as zinc telluride, high-purity tellurium is an indispensable basic raw material. Therefore, the continuous expansion of the semiconductor market provides a broad market space and development opportunities for the production and application of high-purity tellurium. Globally, tellurium resources are mainly distributed in Bulgaria, Canada, China, Japan, Russia, South Africa, Sweden and other countries. The leading high-purity tellurium companies mainly include Aurubis, Nornickel, Shandong Humon Smelting, etc. The top 5 high-purity indium companies have a share of more than 70%, and the market concentration is relatively high.
