Infrared (IR), sometimes called infrared light, is electromagnetic radiation (EMR) with wavelengths longer than those of visible light. It is therefore invisible to the human eye. IR is generally understood to encompass wavelengths from around 1 milli-meter (300 GHz) to the nominal red edge of the visible spectrum, around 700 nano-meters (430 THz). Infrared Glass refers to allow infrared light to pass through the glass and reduce the loss of infrared light as much as possible. Because not all infrared light can easily pass through the glass. Near-infrared light can pass through glass like visible light, down to around 1.5µm. Glass absorbs around 3µm and above. Infrared glass materials include germanium, zinc selenide, zinc sulfur, magnesium fluoride, calcium fluoride, sapphire, chalcogenide glass, etc.
The global market for Infrared Glass was estimated to be worth US$ 195 million in 2023 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 343 million by 2030 with a CAGR of 8.6% during the forecast period 2024-2030.
The infrared glass market has shown a significant growth trend in recent years, mainly benefiting from the increased demand for infrared technology in multiple industries. The application of infrared-transmitting glass is expanding from traditional industrial and military fields to more consumer electronics fields. For example, more and more smartphones and other consumer electronics products are beginning to use infrared-transmitting glass to achieve functions such as facial recognition and gesture control.
Global key players of Infrared Glass include Umicore, LightPath Technologies and Schott, etc. Global top three manufacturers hold a share nearly 50%. Europe is the largest producer of Infrared Glass, followed by United States and China.
From the perspective of regional markets, the Asia-Pacific region, especially the Chinese market, shows strong demand growth. This is due to the rapid development of these countries in the fields of smart manufacturing, smartphones and automotive industries. At the same time, the North American and European markets also maintain their leading position in technological innovation and high-end applications.
