Smart spindles can be described as spindles with the capabilities of sensing, decision making and control, which guarantee the optimum machining process and reliable operations. Traditional spindles only have the abilities to passively obey operators’ commands and react to them, even when the assigned task is not suitable for their current conditions. Intelligent spindles should be able to actively suggest task arrangements and adjust/modify operational parameters to optimize machining.
