Vanadium oxide (VOx) infrared detectors are devices used for detecting infrared radiation based on the properties of vanadium oxide material. These detectors operate in the mid-wave infrared (MWIR) and long-wave infrared (LWIR) regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Material Properties: Vanadium oxide exhibits a property known as metal-insulator transition, which means its electrical conductivity can change dramatically in response to temperature variations. This property makes vanadium oxide sensitive to infrared radiation.

Detection Principle: When infrared radiation strikes the vanadium oxide material, it causes localized heating, which alters its conductivity. This change in conductivity is proportional to the intensity of the incident infrared radiation. By measuring this change, the presence and intensity of infrared radiation can be detected and quantified.

Applications: VOx infrared detectors find applications in various fields, including thermal imaging, night vision, surveillance, industrial process monitoring, and gas detection. They are particularly useful in applications requiring high sensitivity, fast response times, and the ability to operate at room temperature or higher.
