An autocorrelator is used to measure the pulse duration. The basic principle is to use a beam splitter to create two copies of the incoming beam. These copies are superimposed in a nonlinear medium, where they interact to produce a third beam. Since the overlap of the two copies depends on the pulse duration, analysis of the third beam allows calculation of the pulse duration.
