Biochips are collections of tiny test sites (microarrays) arranged on a solid substrate, allowing many tests to be performed simultaneously for higher throughput and speed. Normally, the surface area of a biochip is no larger than a fingernail. Just as computer chips can perform millions of mathematical operations in a second, biochips can perform thousands of biological reactions, such as decoding genes, in a matter of seconds.
