Because oil, gas, and water all contain hydrogen atoms, multiphase flows can be measured using magnetic resonance. A subsea real-time multiphase flowmeter is a device used to measure the individual phase flows of the constituent phases in a given flow (such as the oil and gas industry) where the oil, water and gas mixture is initially mixed together during the oil production process. Because oil, gas, and water all contain hydrogen atoms, multiphase flows can be measured using magnetic resonance. For this, the fluid is magnetized and subsequently excited by radio frequency pulses. The hydrogen atoms respond to the pulse and send back recorded echoes.
