Graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) vaporizes samples by using a graphite coated furnace. The free atom will absorb the light at the characteristic frequency or wavelength of the element of interest. Within a certain range, the amount of light absorbed can be linearly correlated with the concentration of analyte. The free atoms of most elements can be produced from the sample by applying high temperature. In GFAAS, samples are deposited in small graphite or pyrocarbon coated graphite tubes, which can then be heated to vaporize and atomize analytes. The atom absorbs ultraviolet or visible light and transforms it into a higher electronic level. Due to the variation of atomization efficiency from the sample matrix and the inhomogeneity of the concentration and optical path length of analyte atoms, it is difficult to directly apply beer Lambert Law in atomic absorption spectrometry. The concentration measurement is usually determined according to the working curve after calibrating the instrument with the standard of known concentration.
