Medium-voltage inverters are used for direct variable-speed control of medium-voltage motors. They raise the efficiency and power factor, stabilize motor operations and conserve energy. Inverters mostly feed into the low-voltage grid and are then coupled to the medium-voltage grid via large 50 Hz transformers. However, the use of new types of silicon carbide (SiC) transistors with very high blocking voltages now also makes it possible to connect the inverters directly to the medium-voltage grid.
