Nodular pig iron is a type of intermediate product that is created between blast furnace slag and wrought iron. Nodular pig iron is made from scrap metal that has been forged together to create new products, such as steel. Nodular pig iron is also known as high purity pig iron or ductile pig iron, because it is used in the manufacture of ductile iron castings, which have spherical graphite nodules in their microstructur. Nodular pig iron has a high carbon content, typically 3.7 - 4.7%, and low levels of impurities such as phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, and manganese.
