Industry Highlights 2024–2025

Argentina’s first commercial-scale DLE success. Eramet launched its Centenario-Ratones project, delivering its first lithium carbonate in late 2024 with a design capacity of 24,000 tons per year. Ramp-up continues through 2025, marking the first large-scale operational success for sorbent and ion-exchange DLE.

U.S. federal financing in California. The Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office approved conditional multi-billion-dollar backing for EnergySource Minerals’ Salton Sea project, with targeted output of 20,000 tons per year lithium hydroxide. This is the largest U.S. government support to date for DLE deployment.

Arkansas as a new lithium basin. Standard Lithium and Equinor advanced the South West Arkansas project with a $225 million federal grant. Planned in two stages, the project targets up to 45,000 tons per year of production.

Technology upgrades. Lilac Solutions introduced its fourth-generation ion-exchange media at Lake Resources’ Kachi project, boosting recovery rates to 90 percent, reducing costs, and minimizing water use.

Europe doubles down. Germany awarded Vulcan Energy €104 million in funding to accelerate its Zero Carbon Lithium™ project in the Upper Rhine Valley, which is already producing lithium chloride and has binding offtake agreements exceeding first-phase capacity.

Five Company Product Snapshots

Standard Lithium — LiSTR™ (Arkansas, USA)

· Battery-quality lithium carbonate, Phase 1A production about 5,400 tons per year.

· DFS confirms capital cost of about US$365 million, operating cost near US$6,810 per ton.

· First full-scale DLE facility in North America once operational.

E3 Lithium — Clearwater Project (Alberta, Canada)

· Planned production of 32,250 tons per year battery-grade lithium hydroxide.

· 50-year life supported by reservoir management.

· First lithium-in-brine proven reserve in Canada declared with PFS.

Vulcan Energy — Zero Carbon Lithium™ (Germany)

· Phase One capacity of 24,000 tons per year lithium hydroxide monohydrate.

· First lithium chloride already produced in 2024.

· Overcapacity offtakes with major automakers including Volkswagen and Stellantis.

EnergySource Minerals — ILiAD™ / Project ATLiS (California, USA)

· Planned production of 20,000 tons per year lithium hydroxide.

· DOE conditional loan commitment announced in 2025.

· Signed supply agreement with Ford Motor Company.

Lilac Solutions — Gen4 Ion-Exchange Media (Argentina)

· Achieved lithium recovery of about 90 percent with 99.9 percent impurity rejection.

· Reduced number of required wells, lowering costs and environmental footprint.

· Deployed at Lake Resources’ Kachi project.

Market Trend

Policy Tailwinds

Government support is de-risking projects. The United States extended conditional multi-billion-dollar loans to geothermal lithium in California and $225 million grants in Arkansas. Germany’s €104 million package shows the EU’s commitment to low-carbon domestic lithium. This public capital reduces risk and accelerates commercialization.

First-of-a-Kind Projects Move to Production

Eramet’s Argentine project and Vulcan’s German facility both moved from pilot to production in 2024–2025, proving DLE’s ability to deliver commercial-scale product. Industrial performance data now supports financing and market confidence.

Higher Recoveries and Lower Costs

Advancements such as Lilac’s Gen4 media improved recovery rates and lowered costs, cutting wellfield requirements. Similar modular technology by SLB and others is showing improved reliability across brine types.

Smackover Emerges as a U.S. Lithium Hub

Arkansas brines are being repositioned as a scalable lithium resource base. Standard Lithium and Equinor lead development, with proven brine chemistry and extensive legacy infrastructure.

Securing Long-Term Offtakes

Automakers and cathode producers are contracting early. Vulcan signed multiple offtakes in Europe, while U.S. carmakers like Ford secured deals with EnergySource Minerals. These contracts stabilize demand and provide revenue certainty.

Adjusting to Price Volatility

The price correction of 2024 forced companies to optimize cost structures and phase project builds. Some companies cut workforce and restructured assets, but the sector continues moving forward with improved efficiency.

Modularity and Speed

DLE’s modular approach allows smaller footprints, faster build times, and scalable growth. Containerized columns and skid-mounted systems are reducing deployment timelines.

Europe’s Push for Localization

Vulcan Energy is pioneering a European supply chain for battery-grade lithium, directly supporting the region’s EV production growth. Localization of supply is increasingly valued by OEMs for compliance and carbon accounting.

Conclusion

The combination of rapid technology improvements, strong government support, and first large-scale operating plants is transforming the DLE landscape. From Argentina to Arkansas, Germany to California, projects are moving into production, contracts are being signed with global automakers, and the market is positioned to grow at a record pace. The 45.3 percent CAGR through 2031 is no longer theoretical—it is being built today, plant by plant, module by module.
